Westchester Info for Wayfarers
Near the Airport
Westchester in Los Angeles is one of the major neighborhoods of the city. It resides in the Westside region of Los Angeles County. It is also the home of LAX, the Los Angeles International Airport. It is also near UCLA and home to many other landmarks of the city, including Loyola Marymount University, Otis College of Art and Design, and the Westchester Enriched Sciences Magnet Schools.
This part of the city has many neighbors, including Playa Vista and Culver City to the north. It also has Inglewood and Lennox to the east. To the South is Hawthorne. Originally Westchester was a largely agricultural area, but rapidly developed as a city of Los Angeles developed.
This neighborhood hosted the cross-country part of the equestrian event for the 1932 Summer Olympics within the city. By the late 1930s, some residential programs started to build single-family homes throughout the area. It grew incredibly fast to the point where it became faster than the ability to create a police station or Hospital.
Much of this area lost some of its desirability after the massive expansion of LAX. Currently, there are about 40,000 people in the area. Westchester is approximately 11 square miles large, which makes the per capita population density nearly 3,600 per square mile. This is one of the lowest in Los Angeles the city but about average for the county.
Whites make up a vast majority of the population with a substantial minority of both blacks and Latinos. This remains one of the Richer parts of the city with a per capita income about $135,000. This area also has one of the highest percentages of completion of colleges in the city. There are also several primary schools and universities within the district, which seems to underline that fact.
