West Hills – Near the Edge of the LA City
West Hills is a bit of a combination of sorts. It acts as both a residential and commercial area for the City of Los Angeles. It is also in the western part of the San Fernando Valley. A smaller part of the city, it remains an important part of the overall fabric of Los Angeles and the wider Los Angeles county. Below we will list some factors about the community as well as its history. This is part of our overall article series on the different parts of LA.
What is Home to the Peak?
Originally founded as Owensmouth in 1912, then Canoga Park, the area was renamed West Hills in 1987. It takes up about 9 square miles and has a relatively low population of about 45,000. The population density is also on the low side compared to the rest of the city, about 4,000 per square miles.
The portion of Los Angeles is home to many key landmarks, including the Shadow Ranch Ranch House and Park. Other parks include the El Escorpion Park near the peak and the Bell Canyon Park. Many people visit the hills at the Upper Las Virgenes Canyon. There are a number of neighborhood parks and the Peppergate Ranch. The community is also home to seven public schools, one charter school, and seven private schools. It’s a diverse area for young families.
